Writing a CV is all about creating a strong first impression and winning that vital interview. Be positive and highlight achievements which you feel would benefit the organisation. In a competitive candidate market it is essential to market yourself in the best possible light by focusing on your skills, experience and true potential for the position you are applying for.
Some basic guidelines
- Aim to keep your CV to no more than two pages, unless you have extensive experience.
- It is essential your CV is easy to read. Keep the layout professional by limiting paragraphs to five or six lines and use bullet points to add clarity.
- Use a spell checker to check the document. Always get a third party to read through your CV for you before sending it anywhere.
- Print on good quality plain paper.
- Be honest and ensure that everything on your CV is true, accurate and can be verified.
- Explain all employment gaps on your CV. If you were out of work for a period, or travelling, include it as a stage in your history.
- List responsibilities then any achievements for each role you have had.

Your CV should include the following:
- Personal credentials
- Education - listed in reverse chronological order
- Qualifications
- Training courses
- Professional Memberships
- Profile - A summary of your key attributes, achievements and the type of opportunity you are seeking.
- Employment History - Write the employer’s name and location in bold type. Employers often select for interview by identifying with companies that are known to them. Briefly describe the employer’s business and size. List work experience in reverse chronological order with specific dates. Ensure responsibilities are clear then include any specific achievements you had for each role.
- Highlight any special projects or unusual work you have completed that will encourage the reader to take a closer look.
- Include work referees.
